Using the MelodyneBridge

The step-by-step example of Cubase SX shows you how the MelodyneBridge enables you to seamlessly integrate Melodyne into your existing host sequencer software.

  • Start a recording application (e.g. Cubase SX).
  • Open an arrangement with a vocal track.
  • Find the mixer channel assigned to the track you wish to edit and insert ‘MelodyneBridge’ in the first effects slot.
  • Open the plug-in window for the ‘MelodyneBridge’ [fig. 1].
  • Now start Melodyne.
  • Melodyne will detect the recording application and will ask you if you want to connect to it [fig. 2].
  • Choose „MelodyneBridge".
  • If you haven’t done so already, configure the buffer sizes of the two applications as explained here.
  • Create a new arrangement within Melodyne. By default, Melodyne will create an 8-track arrangement with the tracks labelled ‘Track 1’, Track 2’, Track 3’ , and so on. Important: save this arrangement in the project folder of your Cubase song.
  • Now go back to the MelodyneBridge; note that the Bridge is now showing all the tracks of the arrangement [fig. 3].
  • Switch on ‘Track 1’ by checking the relevant box. From now on, the Cubase channel in which you have installed the MelodyneBridge (for the sake of argument, let’s say it is Channel 1) is linked to Melodyne’s ‘Track 1’.
  • Switch to RECORD mode by clicking the Mode button.
  • Within Cubase, move the project cursor to the bar from which you wish to begin transferring audio to Melodyne.
  • Start playback within Cubase; wait until 2 bars have been played and then stop playback. Note that the MelodyneBridge mode will automatically switch from RECORD to PLAYBACK again.
  • Go to Melodyne and detect the file as usual. Open the editor and select a few notes. Go back to Cubase and move the Left and Right Locators to encompass the bars that have been transferred to Melodyne, including additional bars at the beginning and end, and click the Cycle button in the Transport panel. Start playback in Cubase
  • Now go back to Melodyne and open the transferred audio in the Editor Window. As the audio plays back, change the pitch or timing of a few notes in the usual way and you will hear the results instantly within the context of the entire arrangement. In this way, it is possible to edit your melodies in real time as the project plays back within the host application.
