The Sound Wizard

Husky's amazing career began working as staff engineer at Hollywood's legendary Sound Factory studios. In 2003 his artistry on knobs and faders won him two Grammys, one for his work on the Solomon Burke record Don’t Give Up On Me and the other for Norah Jones’s Come Away With Me. Amongst others he has also recorded Tom Waits, Sheryl Crow and the Gypsy Kings.

What projects have you worked on recently?

Recent albums include Fantomas (Delìrium Còrdia and most recently Suspended Animation). Also Vincent & Mr. Green and Tom Waits. Right now I'm working on a record with guitar player Susan Tedeschi, produced by Joe Henry.

Did you use Melodyne on these projects? In which songs, in which particular moment?

Melodyne was used quite a bit on the Fantomas records. Mostly for stretching things or pitch shifting. Sometimes even beyond 'realistic' results...

Also, when doing mixes or even overdubs, Melodyne is on hand for the occasional vocal fix, but of course, I can't remember which albums that was on (smiles).

How has Melodyne changed the way you work with audio files?

Well, obviously the fact that audio can now be treated almost like MIDI data makes a huge difference. For albums that are more on the experimental side, like Fantomas and Vincent & Mr Green, it's great to have this tool to quickly 'mangle' things... or create the odd harmony or effect.

What is your workflow with Melodyne? How is it integrated into your production environment?

Most of the time I'm working on tape, while tracking or overdubbing, so I have Melodyne on the G5, as a standalone app. If there are things to fix or change, I'll quickly fly a rough mix and the track in question (vocal for instance) along with time code. I will then change or fix what I need, and then fly the fixed track back to tape. Sometimes I'll work inside Logic and then I'll use the MelodyneBridge to do the necessary repairs.

What do you like most about Melodyne?

The fact that this app does what no other app does is obviously the best feature! And the rate of updates and new feature releases makes it obvious that these guys are on the ball, and that's almost as important as anything: That company is behind the product 100 percent!
