Hi Everybody!
I'm a brand new aspiring songwriter who has never used any kind of software whatsoever, and that's the honest truth (just cheap, handheld audio cassette players). I am considering getting Melodyne Editor because I not only want to record my song ideas, but I also want a graphical representation of my melodies to visualize my variations (and to begin to play with some of the other Melodyne possibilities -- like Direct Note Access (DNA) for guitar chords).
My question is whether I need to first record into Garageband (or some other program) and import the recording into Melodyne Editor, or can Melodyne Editor handle the recording with my new MacBook Pro? Further, as a recording studio program, can Melodyne Editor do just about everything that Garageband can? (I don't need 8 tracks and would like to learn to use only one program for everything if possible).
My specs:
Model Name: MacBook Pro Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,3 Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz Number Of Processors: 1 Total Number Of Cores: 2 L2 Cache: 3 MB Memory: 4 GB Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz Boot ROM Version: MBP53.00AC.B03 SMC Version (system): 1.48f2
Thanks Everybody!!!!!!

Hello stu m,
welcome to the forum. Yes, you can record directly into Melodyne editor. But Melodyne editor isn't really meant to replace a DAW like GarageBand.

It is simpler to rethink your way of simplifying it. Use both hammer and screwdriver, Editor and GarageBand. Use GarageBand with 2 instances of Editor, 1 track polyphonic for the guitar and 1 track monophonic for the vocal and you can then see and edit in them both with optimal audio quality. You can speak the lyrics and decide the melody after.) When songwriting with guitar and vocals, you'll need max 10% G-band knowledge and 90% Editor knowledge =100%. Best to use G-band to separate the vocals and instrument, add delays, compression, EQ etc. To edit your music properly, you'll need Editor. Fortunately G-band is free for you, so you only have to buy 1 software to get all possibilities and your best results.

Thank you both very much. Creater, good suggestions which I will surely follow. I can get help with G-band at the Apple store since I purchased the 1 year One-to One support. creater wrote: 2 instances of Editor This little bit of info is a definite "ahh" for me as I seek to get my mind around the very basics. Thanks. Besides Melodyne Editor, I'll be purchasing some microphone and I guess some kind of firewire or USB audio interface/controller device. Don't have a clue what to get. Also wondering if I should just record to my Mac's internal hard disk (500gig) and later move my recordings over to my cheap 1 terabyte USB external hard drive (instead of recording directly to a fancy new firewire external hard drive). Any suggestions by anyone on anything are most welcome. stu m

If you just want your voice into Melodyne, it's a very straight forward recording procedure (but with the option to edit the result and correct it when done). If you want guitar and voice, recording 2 tracks using 2 instances of Melodyne as a plug-in is a good way since you can keep the vocals and the guitar separated but can still audition both simultaneously using GarageBand and edit both optimal since they will play in sync. If you want to record a whole song with vocals and guitar in one take you can of course do that and you can also edit but you might run into 'the problem' at places where recorded notes are unison for instrument and vocals as they are then mixed and you will move mixed blobs. GarageBand can host a number of Melodynes and keep things separated so why not use that? The audio quality will also be better when editing on separate tracks. You can analyze vocals with monophonic algorithm and guitar with polyphonic DNA algorithm. Melodyne Editor doesn't have panning or EQ so it's not really a substitute for a DAW as you might want to use different FX's on your vocals and your instrument. **
