I've upgraded from XP to Windows 7 64 bit and reinstalled my Sonar 8.5 but this time the 64 bit version. My old Plugin didn't work in this environment so I sprung for the Melodyne Editor version at a cost of another £112. I used to have a Melodyne that worked and now I don't. Editor works for a few minutes then crashes out the Sonar program. I've increased the audio latency from 256 to 1536 samples and still no joy. The project is small - six audio tracks including one vocal track which I'm trying to use Editor on. I don't know what else to check and am coming to the conclusion that I may have just wasted £112.... Any Sonar 8.5 64 bit users out there who can perhaps help? Thanks John

Hello Skyline,
I'm sorry to hear that you are not happy with Melodyne editor. I will forward it to the team. Perhaps you could elaborate what exactly the problem is. Does it happen in one particular project or is it a general problem? Which kind of file do you open with Melodyne? How much RAM have you got?

Hello John,
as discussed in support. It is recommended to use ASIO drivers with a buffersize of at least 1024 samples. I wouldn't recommend using WDM drivers here.

Thanks Ulf. I've posted on the Sonar forum asking if there are any MAudio Delta 66 users who use ASIO and can get the low latency I get with WDM (4.8ms). As I said, I can only get 80ms (!!!) when I change to ASIO in Sonar which is unusable for me, a guitarist who uses guitar processor plugins. Let's hope someone can enlighten me on how to configure ASIO in Sonar (almost all the options come up as unchangeable when I try to do this, hence I'm stuck with a ludicrous 80ms). My fall back is to use Editor in stanalone mode which works fine.

Hey John,
from your experience, do most Sonar users use WDM drivers rather than ASIO?
M-Audio's ASIO drivers are usually very good. Please check if your driver is up-to-date or if there is a newer version available from the M-Audio site. I'm sure you will be able to get a latency lower than 80ms. By the way, this does not really depend on the DAW you're using.
But what's more important: It's a common misunderstanding that a low latency is the most crucial thing about audio recording. It's true, when you are recording audio tracks and you need software monitoring, then you should go for a low latency. But once all tracks are recorded, many systems will benefit from increasing the audio buffer size for the arranging and mixing bit of a production (including the use of Melodyne) in order to release CPU load.
Moreover, it should be possible to change your audio driver at any time. If you are convinced that only WDM drivers give you the latency you need, then please try recording with WDM and switching to ASIO afterwards. Does Melodyne still crash than or is it more stable?

Use ASIO here.. Melodyne Editor x64 works perfect in both SONAR 8.5 x64 and SONAR X1 x64.

As I said, I can't get an acceptably low latency with ASIO and my MAudio Delta66 and Sonar. I didn't get a response on the Sonar forum to how to setup ASIO with a Delta66, so I'm stuck having to use Editor in standalone mode.

Hello Skyline,
there must be a way to run the Delta with lower ASIO latency. I have had a 1010 and various other M-Audio product. You may need to shutdown the sequencer and then adress the driver control panel.

It sounds like you're trying to use the slider in Sonar to set the ASIO buffer size. You need to use the M-Audio Delta control panel to set it. Many have a problem with the current M-Audio control panel not opening when you click the button in Sonar (or any DAW for that matter) to open the M-Audio panel, so you might need to open it from your task bar *after* opening Sonar's Audio properties, when done setting the buffer which is on the 'Hardware' tab, then click Okay on Sonar's audio properties.

Hi Dan, Yes, I'd been doing that correctly but still couldn't change the ridiculous latency. As ASIO can tolerate only one sound device (as opposed to WDM) do you think it's something to do with my motherboard's 'Realtek' sound device? As you use Sonar I'll post images of my audio settings later today and perhaps you'd be kind enough to comment on what's wrong? Many thanks!

Hi Dan I've managed to invoke ASIO drivers. One of the things that may have helped was that I went into the BIOS and disabled onboard sound ('Realtek' on my Intel mobo) and that stopped something called 'Hi Definition Audio' being forced on some of the Sonar audio setup tabs. In this setup Melodyne Editor works ok without falling over and latency when using a guitar plugin is almost (but not quite) as low as when using WDM. (NB to Ulf: yes, Sonar recommend using WDM as Sonar is built to take full advantage of WDM kernal streaming). However, I don't think I've got things 100% right. Here are three images of the tabs in my Sonar Audio setup. -In the General tab clicking the 'ASIO Panel' button has no effect. Nothing opens. -In the Advanced tab (second image), at the bottom, there are two choices for Record Latency and although 'M-Audio Delta ASIO (4 in 3 out)' is available to choose, that is ignored when I close the tabs, and 'Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver (1 in 1 out)' is put in its place. -Oddly, in the Drivers tab (third image) the top item 'Generic Low Latency ASIO Driver Multichannel (M-Audio Delta 1)' is greyed out and not selectable. Any ideas on these at all? Many thanks John

Those settings look fine though you should be able to go down to 128 samples without problem until you start loading your system down with effects. I find 256 samples fine though as far as latency goes when recording. Once you add MEditor though you do need to up the buffers to at least 512, and I usually set it to 1024, though really I haven't found ME any more stable vs 512.
Melodyne Editor is a very crash prone plugin in Sonar though you should be able to work for more than a few minutes with it especially on such a small project. Try doing sections at a time on your vocal track not the whole track at once, Save often, once your done with 1 track freeze it, Save, Close Sonar, Reopen and do the next track. It's a pain but it's what I have to do to get anything done with ME.
Edit: Just noticed you have the 64 bit audio engine checked, try unchecking that and see if you have better luck, some plugin's have problems with that ME may be one. I don't use the 64 bit audio engine which is about the only difference in your settings vs mine.

Many thanks Dan. Glad I'm on the right track. I'll see how it goes. BTW, I assume you up the samples for an ME session by going into the Delta control panel, changing it there and then reloading Sonar? NB: I think the inability to open the ASIO Panel may be a bug in the Delta driver. I see they have a new Beta one out, but I'm not going to be brave enough to try it yet!

That's correct.
I've installed the Beta driver, but it doesn't fix the ASIO panel problem, other than that no problems so far with it.
