Hello everybody, some of you already might have seen our Video Manual which is basically a filmed version of our Melodyne user manual. Now we'd like to extend our series of videos with some tutorials and How Tos. In contrast to the Video Manual, the tutorials are supposed to focus on workflow, musical applications, real-life scenarios etc. For example: How do I create backing vocals? What can I do with Audio-to-MIDI? How do I make different beats match in tempo? etc. Of course we have a few ideas on our own, but before we start, we'd like to ask you: What would you like to see in these tutorials? Is there anything you want us to explain in more detail? Or are there any workflows, tips or tricks you would like to share with your fellow Melodyne users? What are the things in Melodyne that you find the most inspiring? And why? Please feel free to add as many suggestions and ideas to this thread as you like. Thank you very much, all at Celemony

I'd like to see somebody working with some choral files. I'm editing a CD of vocal music at the moment and I find that I'm only able to effect minor changes without incurring major artifacts. I've used the plugin for a few years for solo vocals and it works very well. So I'm curious.

I've only been using Melodyne (Plugin -> Editor) for less than a year and I have always found the videos very helpful. So I am looking forward to ALL of the above but especially backing vocals and quantizing bass parts to the drums.

Syncing up primitive vocals: tempo - pitch - performance. Using all available methods and how to solve the issues one encounters. That would be interesting. Challenging the "where is the limit" to what you can/can't do if any.

Our first three video tutorials are online now. Please feel free to post more ideas and wishes for further tutorials.

For vocals, your videos show singers in the tenor and alto range. I for one would like to see a workflow where a harmony track is being created for a baritone vocal. I might add, not a Pavarotti vocal, but something more like Jim Morrison, mainly because I primarily use Melodyne on my own voice(for vocals), and my voice sounds like Jim Morrison and not Pavarotti.
To sum up, I would like to see a tutorial on creating harmonies for someone who is NOT a tenor or an alto, specifically a lower and deeper voice. In the baritone range.

Hello BROMOKAT202,
thanks for your suggestion. However, the techniques for editing a baritone singer wouldn't be any different from other singers. Of course, if you are trying to create a soprano voice from a baritone track, I wouldn't expect it to sound perfectly natural, since this is quite a distance for pitch-shifting. But this is all about your source material and not so much about a particular technique which we could show in a tutorial.

This post should have gone on the "wish list" thread but no bother, I hope. I find the Celemony videos very helpful and would like to see a Celemony video specifically showing the workflow for converting audio to MIDI. I have not delved into the capabilities of Melodyne to convert audio files to MIDI yet, because Melodyne does so much and has so much potential and I've been focusing on learning to use it for other things presently. But soon I hope to begin experimenting more with converting audio to MIDI, then using soft synths(or hardware synths) to create new musical passages from the data. One workflow I've considered but am not sure how to implement is singing a scat vocal along with other prerecorded tracks, then converting the audio data(wave forms) created by the performance to MIDI using Melodyne, then assigning a synth voice to the data. The logic behind this is creating an impromptu arrangement or accompaniment entirely with a vocal track, then converting the data into instrumentation. I know that Melodyne can do this though I haven't actually tried it yet but it would be interesting to see a video showing the workflow for accomplishing this. Another thing to consider is that a handicapped person who cannot necessarily play an instrument could create music vocally by using Melodyne and soft synths. I personally am not handicapped but in this day of "universal access" I'm sure that there are persons who could use Melodyne to overcome certain physical limitations in music performance and open up even wider horizons to their creativity. Just a thought.

Hello BROMOKAT202, we already have two videos up about this: Saving MIDI and Extracting a Guitar Lick to MIDII hope they will be of some help when you explore this exciting feature.

Yes, Claudio, those are excellent tutorials. I understand that the aspects of Melodyne that are covered by these tutorials are the same to be used for the workflow I described, but I guess I was hoping for a specific tutorial that would show someone singing, creating a series of "blobs" from the vocal performance, then converting the blobs to MIDI, then singing additional accompanying tracks. In other words, creating a musical performance entirely with vocals, then assigning synth tracks to each track in the vocal performance, substituting the synth voice for the vocal. Intuitive people can certainly take the principles covered by the very excellent tutorials you referred to and accomplish this, but what of those persons who might need to be "led more by the hand" as it were to be shown a more specific workflow for accomplishing this? I understand the work and expense behind creating these tutorial videos, but I don't think that this one is necessarily that redundant. Regardless, I am happy with Melodyne and look forward to whatever further tutorial videos Celemony can provide. Thanks again.

I would love to see a tutorial for converting a speech or dialogue (non-pitched) to a pitched melody. I'm not looking for robatic effects. I'm trying to achieve natural singing effects as humanly as possible.
